I'm helping to test the structural integrity of the Spinnaker Tower, or abseiling as they call it. In all seriousness, it is to support the RNRMC to be able to continue offering support to those who served and their families.
I am joined by an Oppo in this misadventure, in the shape of a fellow matelot who I often played poker with in the mess, yet neither of us spoke up about how it was affecting our lives.
Leaving the Armed Forces can leave us seeking out unhealthy coping strategies to cope with the loss of purpose, loss of identity, and loss of comradery and banter. It can result in alcohol and substance abuse, gambling, shopping, exercise (not my issue), work, or any number of other compulsions that start to dominate and harm our family life and lives in general, all in the hope to escape the uncomfortable, and because we don't talk.
At some point, many of us will need help to break this destructive pattern of behaviour, and we may just need one of those services commissioned, and funded by the RNRMC.
My story and struggles are well documented, probably too well at times. But put in basic terms, I am in recovery from a 30+ year gambling addiction, which contributed to me causing many loved ones, and anyone I came in to contact with, some level of harm.
Unfortunately, my story is not unique, and gambling harms blight many lives. Many of you may scoff, but due to the hidden nature of the beast, you may be living with, or close to someone struggling today.
One of the reasons we don't speak up, is the culture within the Armed Forces, and the stigma around gambling. The fear of being seen as weak, or stupid can keep people suffering for many years, often until it's too late.
The reason for choosing the RNRMC is due to their endless and tireless work to highlight the mental health struggles we can all at times face. In funding some amazing organisations, they support 1,000s to do the bravest thing, which is to ask for help.
There is no time for what if, should have, or could have any longer, and that is why I stupidly agreed to take on this challenge. It couldn't be further from my comfort zone, but neither is suffering in silence.
It will also help to fund many red crayons which are often found missing from the packet due to the inability of Royal Marines to resist that strawberry flavour.
This event supports those who serve and have served in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Royal Fleet Auxiliary helping to fund life-changing support such as assistance for injured personnel, mental health services, and financial support for service families when they need it most.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a real difference to the lives of those who have given so much in service to our country. By supporting my abseil, you’re helping to ensure the Royal Navy family receives the care, support, and respect they deserve.
Thank you so much for your generosity and support.
